Challenge 17: "In which Chloe learns something about Clark that she didn't know before"

A continuation of my earlier response to this challenge, Departure.

With Martha on the phone with Sheriff Adams, Chloe wandered upstairs to Clark's bedroom.

She gazed out the window at the fair early-summer afternoon, and sat down on the bed wrestling inwardly with herself.

She simply couldn't tell everything about her last conversation with Clark.

Clark's desk drawer was not completely shut. Chloe caught a glimpse of white envelope inside. She slid the drawer open wider; actually, it practically opened itself.

The envelope said, "Chloe" in Clark's sloppy handwriting. Eyes widening, she felt rabidly curious and justified for snooping, all at once.

She checked the back first. Hallmark.

On the front? Charlie Brown and Lucy, holding hands.

Inside was printed, "To the best friend a guy could ever have." Underneath, in Clark’s scrawl: "Sorry I've been such a jerk lately."

She closed the card quickly, throat aching, and covered her face with her hands.
