Lana was on her second mocha latte; Lex on his third coffee. Snippets of conversation drifted to Clark, over by the Talon door.

"... can’t get a break, Lex, since my parents died."

"...Don’t think Chloe wants me there anymore. My father’s wife is leaving... him...Clark...not sure how I feel... best friend drowned when I was ten. And my aunt tried to uproot me in the middle of school!"

Lex nodded absently, stirring his coffee. Turning pleading eyes toward Clark, he mouthed the words: Save. Me.

Clark ambled over.

"Lex, that ride home, remember? I need to get back, now."

"Take care, Lana," Lex stood up. "It’ll get better."

Lana nodded, looking unconvinced.

Clark and Lex took big gulps of air outside, looked at each other, and laughed.

"Whew. Heavy duty!" Lex exclaimed. "I owe you!"

Clark smiled. "What are friends for?"
