Lex left that particular winter Saturday free for a drive to Metropolis. He could easily have forgotten, but he'd willed himself to remember.
No point in holding grudges. He knew now what the burn of unrequited love was like. Could offer friendship, at least.
"Keep the afternoon free," he'd said on the phone. "We'll go to the zoo, to lunch, have hot chocolate, just like we used to. It's your birthday, after all."
On the way, he stopped to buy a handful of pansies, always her favorite. For thoughts, as he'd thought of her often over the past year.
When she opened the door, her face brightened into a smile as he held out the bunch of flowers.
"Lex," she breathed, her little-girl voice still the same. She buried her face in the blooms.
"Hello, Amy. We have lots of catching up to do."
