The deserted manor garden baked in noontime heat. Clark looked around before pushing open the greenhouse door. Much cooler inside than out, he thought.
"Clark," The sleek timbre of Lex's voice greeted him.
"Enrique sent me out. What's up?"
"Time with plants. Lionel's project, but I'm taking it over. Each flower has symbolic meaning, Clark. Great for communication--beats the telephone. Try it with Lana."
"Like in 'Hamlet'," Clark mused. "Rosemary for remembrance, pansies for thoughts?"
"Ace that test?" Lex smiled.
"Almost."
"Fennel, columbines. Remember, Clark?"
Despite the warmth of Lex's breath, so close, Clark shivered.
"Here you go," Lex pressed blossoms and leaves, expertly tied, into Clark's hand.
Clark took a whiff. Red rose, yellow tulip, mix of carnations. All familiar blooms, but, "What's this?"
"Mock orange," Lex replied.
"And they all mean?"
"Go home, look it up. I'll wait for the reply."
