Jonathan sat on the bottom step, holding a photograph. The ultrasound picture would have appeared nothing but a blur to anyone else.
"I can't believe it, Martha. We've waited years for this."
"We have," Martha agreed, sitting down, slipping an arm around Jonathan for a quick hug.
"Clark's been a wonderful son. Everything any parent could want. But, this is--"
"Different." Martha finished the sentence for him.
"Maybe I'll be able to pass my old jersey on to someone, after all."
Martha frowned. "Don't ever say that around Clark, Jonathan, for heaven's sake."
"Of course not, Martha. We'll make sure Clark never feels neglected." Jonathan bent to kiss the top of her head. "But, you know what I mean."
Clark, upstairs on the landing, drew back into the shadows, eyes darkening with unshed tears, and decided to wait a bit before going downstairs.
