When Martha came home, she wanted to be alone. Though she told herself she'd shed all her tears in the hospital.

It shouldn't still hurt. Must be hormones. She'd never really expected to have this baby, anyway, knowing from the beginning what a long shot it was.

She shouldn't have let herself think about knit baby clothes, or methods of childbirth. Or wonder about whether it was a boy or a girl. Whether Jonathan was being truthful when he said it didn't matter.

About what a fine big brother Clark would be, and how she couldn't wait to see the two of them together.

She should have expected it, she told herself, even as she dissolved into grief.

If only she'd been more careful. If only she'd stayed at the church.

Losing the baby hurt like hell.

But losing Clark hurt even worse.
