They pretended it was about the fishing trip. Days of stilted conversation, equivocation, and cool hostility that even put Mom on edge. But they both knew better.

I knew you’d react like this

I don’t always need your protection.

Stop treating me like a kid.

Dad. I can’t tell you, but I know you feel it. That’s why you hate him, not because of the Rosses, the plant, or even the investigation. And please…just don’t touch me, not now. Or you’ll burn me in a different way.

Dad’s concern was almost as disturbing as his hatred.

It was there when he spoke with Lex.

Limitations…Don’t get caught, don’t cause a scandal…go fishing with your dad.

Lex glanced down, plucked a wisp of straw from his black jacket. Lex knew, he knew, even though they weren’t exactly admitting it to each other.

This was real.
