Meeting with Jason, however successful a start, left him empty inside. A brief talk with Clark’s parents at the farm, and here he was, lonely graveyard, grey afternoon, scanning rows of tombstones and trees till he found Clark, sprawled on the fresh grave, heedless of dirt and mud.
Lex paused, uncharacteristically hesitant. He knelt in the grass and and laid a palm on Clark’s back.
“Hey, Clark.”
Clark stirred, then, and sat up, and when Lex saw his face was streaked with grime and tears, his heart twisted in his chest. But he waited.
‘She’s dead, Lex,”
“I know. You think it’s the end of the world. You’re strong enough to handle it, though, Clark. Trust me.”
Clark shook his head bleakly, then looked away.
“But you have to grieve, first. No more words. Just let it out.”
Lex held him as he wept.
